Rose and Sam's Excellent Adventure

Tomorrow morning, we’re heading out to the local rubbish tip here (think of a rubbish tip at home, and then imagine it’s Cambodian. Yeah….) with this NGO here to feed a bunch of these kids. When I say a bunch, I mean about 300+.

This organisation is pretty rad. It’s ran out of Bogie and Bacall restaurant. A few times a week, depending on donations and the volunteers, he heads out to this filthy sess-pool and feeds a while bunch of kids out the back of this rented truck.

I was looking at pictures of this place – mountains of rubbish and literally lakes of toxic waste as far as the eyes can see, interspersed with half naked kids walking around in this, and living this. Literally living in it, in huts made from rubbish.

We’re donating 100% of the money we were given for the orphanage to this place and matching it so we’ll donate $500 all up.

First, we go and buy the food (bread, apples, oranges and banwaz) and then head out there. Whole trip takes about 3 hours.

To anyone who knows me, and knows how anal I am, and may be thinking “Sam’s probably shitting himself about going to a CAMBODIAN RUBBISH DUMP” is 100% correct. This will test me about as far as I can go. But these kids live in this shit, so I’ll have to put that behind me. Of course, Rose is like “meh, it’s just rubbish, disease and toxic waste.. It’ll be fine!!”

Epic Fail.

Each trip costs $160, which feeds about 400 kids and they also take a paramedic. Any excess money is used for school uniforms, more food, and more anti-septic for these kids open septic wounds.
