Rose Is Sick!
Yesterday morning, Rose felt a bit shitty and after eating, said her stomach felt like it just caught fire and bailed to the little girls room with the City to Surfs.
Was ok after that, until we had dinner and all hell broke loose with severe stomach cramps, the City-to-Surfs and vomiting.
It was bad enough to visit the local Chemist and pick up some pills to settle it down, which they did, after a very long night!
She’s much better this morning, but very weak and she’s just sleeping and watching cable TV =)
Cause: Watermellon Shakes. She drinks them like it’s going out of fashion (which it isn’t!). These drinks have crushed ice in them, and everytime she drinks them, she tells me “I’m sure it’s fine”. Lily, does this sound like anyone you know? Your Mum perhaps? lol.
Anyway, I think they’re off the menu now and she’ll be careful of the ice situation!
I have a new phone number. To call it locally, it’s 012-188-719-67. Not sure what you call from Australia.

0011 is the exit code from Australia. Works for all carriers AFAIK. So, 0011, then 84 for Veit Nam’s country code, then drop the first 0 in the phone number (0=internal call) and punch the rest.
Mums, AFAIK = “As Far As I Know”)
My she’ll be right approach NEVER extends to having ice in drinks and Rose knows it.
Yet it encapsulates eliminating Malaria medication in high risk malaria zones. I’ve never understood it, myself ;)
There is no medication that you can take to prevent malaria that mossquitoes aren’t immune to except for really strong stuff that is not recommended to be taken as a preventative because the affect on the body is so severe, most particularly for young children. The only way around the whole malaria thing is not to get bitten – you can make yourself feel protected by taking medication, but it’s not going to stop you getting malaria. I’d insert 2 smiley faces here but I’m a mum and don’t know how.
Negative, alpha leader.
In the places we were going to, some strains of Malaria were resistant to some anti-biotics except Doxycyclin, which is what I was taking.
No, it’s not 100% effective, but doxy is a pretty low level anti-biotic and it’s not like eating bleach like it’s made out to be in your comment.
Maybe ok for adults but info I had at the time of travelling with young children was that medications available were not suitable for them – I google Doxycyclin today and it tells me not to give it to a child younger than 8 years old. Doxycycline can cause permanent yellowing or graying of the teeth, and it can affect a child’s growth. Another angle entirely – It also says it makes birth control pills less effective. Believe me Sammy dear if there had been something safe to give Rose and Lil to prevent malaria when we were on our long travels in 1992 and 1994, they would have been taking it. 3 smiling faces if only I knew howxxx
Kerist I had a fortnight in Vienam recently and didnt even give malaria a second thought. What is all this paranoia about sickness that flows like city-to-surf through this blog? I blame Sam’s mum! ;-)
Marsbar you have to start inventing those initial things (wish the brain could recall their name). Instead of saying ‘My she’ll-be-right approach’ you write ‘My SBRA’ It’s parental revenge! hahahahaha. Sorry: It’s PR, aka paparev ;-)
PS: How’s Rose? We are left dangling over the toilet bowl down here where the mossies only carry Ross River Virus and Mutton River Encyphalitis (or HTF you spell it) ;-)
Hey PAPA,
No No No.. There’s no Malaria in HCMC or Hanoi, it was down in the south of Cambodia which was marked as a high risk area which means, you should take something unless you’re willing to risk it, which is fine for some, but I’d rather not risk it.
As the drug is used as a prophylactic to kill the malaria bugs before they get to your liver, multiply then leave your liver for better places (brain, etc) you need to take it two weeks after leaving the malaria area.
My approach is the best, which is to not get bitten… Ever… Under no circumstance lol. But I also took them just to be safe. Some say it’s unsafe, but I say, it helps me relax while I’m doing shit I’d normally never do.
Rose: She’s in bed, still sick. I’m about to post now. In a cool Jazz cafe sucking down Oranginas ;)
Colon Close Bracket
This information about giving Doxy is useful, especially if it’s true that it weakens the pill, but I’m talking about giving it to strong, strapping and unerringly handsome M.E.N. like myself.
As my father pointed out once, Urban Dictionary is a useful tool and I don’t wish to troll anymore, so I’ll pass you onto a link right here
I thought prophylactics were those things you wear when you are…you know… ;-)
Anyway, get some of those sports drinks into Rose…lucosade, gatoraide or whatever…lemonade if they are not available. Fluids and glucose for energy,
failing that G&T! antibiotics? dont know abt that…ask the mums 8-)
